An unpublished variety
Lot 1318
Divus Maximianus, died 310. 1/4 Follis (Bronze, 15 mm, 2.09 g, 11 h), Rome, struck under Constantine, 317-318. DIVO MAXIMIANO SEN FORT IMP Laureate and veiled head of Divus Maximianus to right. Rev. MEMORIAE AETERNAE / RP Lion advancing to right, its head facing (sic!). RIC 123 var. (lion looking right). Stepniewski, 'Not in RIC', -. An interesting and apparently unrecorded variety. Dark green patina. Very fine.

The artist responsible for this reverse die decided to add a small but very neat change: the lion is facing his head to the beholder, making the scene much more captivating than the regular type in which the lion is looking right
